You can choose some added features to your accommodation as well to make it extra special, such as a swimming pool, private garden or hot tub, and there are also cottages that welcome dogs, so that your furry friend needn’t be left behind. Once you have chosen your holiday home, next is to pick the location. If visiting Shropshire, then staying near Ironbridge might be somewhere to consider.
The famous bridge
The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ironbridge Gorge is home to the first major bridge in the world to be made from cast iron and is one of the main tourist attractions in Shropshire. The gorge can be found on the River Severn in the heart of Shropshire with the bridge crossing over it, dating back to the late 18th century, and is a must-see if you are staying in or visiting the area.
There is a town called Ironbridge - named after the bridge itself – just next to the area, and if you want to be right close to this attraction then you might want to choose a holiday rental here. Home to a small museum and various pubs, cafes, shops and restaurants, it is a nice little settlement to reside in if you wish to stay close to the bridge and see it every day on your trip.
Near Shrewsbury
Ironbridge is also only a thirty-minute drive from the county town of Shrewsbury which should definitely be visited on a trip to this part of Shropshire. The birthplace of the Naturalist Charles Darwin is home to hundreds of listed buildings, a castle and a market place, and you can choose to stay here and visit Ironbridge, or perhaps stay in a quieter part of the county and visit Shrewsbury on a day trip instead.
The thriving town of Telford is only a twelve-minute drive from Ironbridge by car and is also worth visiting. You can easily choose accommodation here and visit Ironbridge a couple of times due to its close proximity.
Visit the Museum
As well as the bridge, there are plenty of other attractions in the area worth visiting in what is known as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. The kids will love the Blists Hill Victorian Town, a recreated Victorian town and museum with games and amusements such as horse and cart rides, and old sweet shop and other authentic Victorian shops and houses. There is also the Jackfield Tile Museum which tells the tale of Victorian tile production, plus eight other museums to discover.
Ironbridge has much more to see than the impressive bridge, and you won’t run out of things to do if choosing to stay here on your self-catered holiday to Shropshire.
