The largest lake in the British Isles that opens out into the Irish Sea is Strangford Lough, south east of Belfast. The Irish call their lakes ‘lough’s in much the same way that the Scots call theirs ‘lochs’. This huge expanse of water, that has access to the sea via a channel at its southern end, is dotted with tiny islands that are safe habitats for seabirds and wildlife. The narrow opening to the lough creates a natural sheltered harbour and an ideal place for watersports such as windsurfing.
Strangford Lough is so picturesque that many singers and writers have tried to translate its elusive appeal into words – which cannot possibly do it justice! Walk or cycle around the lough as you breathe in all that gorgeously fresh air, or have a go at kayaking, sailing or sea safari if you’re feeling more energetic. The Castle Espie Wetland Centre is a great base for exploring all the natural wonders of the area, and bird watching is a popular way to while away an afternoon in Strangford.
